Compatibility in acoustic telemetry

چکیده

Abstract Acoustic telemetry is widely used to investigate aquatic animal movement. Pulse position modulation (PPM) an acoustic method that allows multiple unique identification codes be transmitted at a single frequency, typically in the 69 kHz range. However, because potential number of (i.e. tags) ultimately limited by pulses PPM signal, this poses practical limitation. In addition, different manufacturers have developed approaches encoding data, hampering compatibility across brands. A lack broad systems restricts users manufacturer and operating system, reduces market competition limits innovation. As tracking research community organises towards networks devices incompatibility becomes more problematic jeopardizes scientific benefits offered networking approach. Here, we make plea for collaboration among globally propose set open protocols ensure equipment interoperability as medium-term solution.

Transarctic acoustic telemetry.

On April 9 and 13, 1999, two Arctic Climate Observation Using Underwater Sound tomography signals were transmitted from a 20.5-Hz acoustic source moored at the Franz Victoria Strait to an eight-element, 525-m vertical array at ice camp APLIS in the Chukchi Sea at a distance of ∼2720 km. The transmitted signal was a 20-min long, 255-digit m-sequence that can be treated as a binary-phase shift-ke...

Acoustic telemetry reveals cryptic residency of whale sharks.

Although whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) have been documented to move thousands of kilometres, they are most frequently observed at a few predictable seasonal aggregation sites. The absence of sharks at the surface during visual surveys has led to the assumption that sharks disperse to places unknown during the long 'off-seasons' at most of these locations. Here we compare 2 years of R. typus vi...

Design of an acoustic telemetry system for rebreathers.

Despite the abundance of telemetric applications for ecology, behavior and physiology of marine life, few efforts were reported about the use of acoustic telemetry for SCUBA divers. The objective of this study is to design and test an acoustic telemetry system for monitoring breathing gases of a Dräger Dolphin semi-closed circuit rebreather as well as the depth of the diver. The system is desig...

A Novel Acoustic Dissolved Oxygen Transmitter for Fish Telemetry

ate its performance in relation to field biotelemetry. When attached to fishes in the wild, the DO transmitter may be exposed to temporally and spatially changing temperatures. This issue is emphasized by laboratory studies on Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) demonstrating how this species may decrease the preferred temperature as a response to hypoxia (Petersen and Steffensen, 2003). Accordingly, t...

Designing marine fishery reserves using passive acoustic telemetry

Passive acoustic telemetry has been used for many years by fisheries and wildlife biologists to elucidate a number of life-history parameters and to examine the ecological requirements of targeted populations (White and Garrott, 1990). The technology has evolved so that tags are now smaller and battery lives are longer, thus increasing the amount of data acquired and available to the manager or...
